Amanda Figueroa-Stroud is a history teacher at Coney Island Prep.
Created a school-wide student essay content about education equality. She emceed an event for over 1000 charter supporters in the Capitol building in Albany.
The top five essay writers were selected to attend Education Equality Day to speak with state legislators and advocate for public charter schools. She motivated parents and supporters to stand for fair funding and facilities for charter schools.
Joe Herrera is a charter school father from Coney Island, Brooklyn. Joe got involved with Families for Excellent Schools in 2011.
Joe led a group of parents to speak out on behalf of charter school students who were in danger of having their school denied the space it needed to open in time for the upcoming school year. He did this by speaking at press conferences and writing letters to his elected officials and local papers.
Because of the efforts of Joe and his fellow parents, the public charter schools students in his neighborhood were able to begin school on time in their new buildings in 2011 and again in 2014.
Dawn Foye is a volunteer parent leader and member of the Roxbury Chapter of Families for Excellent Schools. Her son is a student at KIPP Academy Boston.
Dawn has spoken at a number of press conferences and rallies, and met with legislators.
Dawn represented all parents by advocating for high quality schools. Her efforts will make high-quality education attainable for families statewide.
