On Thursday April 27th the NAACP held a public hearing in NYC — the latest in their nationwide series of hearings, following the call last October for a moratorium on public charter schools.
Dozens of parents and community advocates attended the NYC hearing on Public School Issues Surrounding Quality Education to show their support for their schools. Community members shared testimony about their experiences navigating the public schools system in city and the larger issue at hand — a lack of high quality school options. .
Many spoke in support of the public charter schools, but the loudest applause of the night went to KIPP first grader and junior member of the NAACP, Nyla Jenkins, who spoke about the impact her school has had on her life.
