Learn About Public Charter Schools

The facts, history, proven success, and the journey ahead

Shykwon Warren, an Achievement First Amistad Middle and High school alumnus, and current freshman at College of the Holy Cross, debunks common myth about charter schools.

College freshman, Shykwon Warren, enrolled in Achievement First Amistad Middle School in 5th grade. He was struggling at his district school and knew it. As an African-American boy from a low-income community, he was rarely told of a future beyond high school. AF Amistad transformed not only his ambition, but also his trajectory. When the lottery pulled his name in 2007, he knew this was his chance to change his future.

“Through that lottery system back in 2007, I realized how behind I was in my academics. By my freshmen year in high school, I earned numerous academic honors awards for being on the dean’s list and maintaining above a 3.0 average. This was only possible because my school believed in me, supported me and challenged me.”
