The facts, history, proven success, and the journey ahead
Tuesday Jan. 17th evening, Governor Cuomo released his plans for the NYS budget. His proposal included a number of significant supports that – if enacted – would strengthen public charter schools across NY state.
First, the Governor’s budget proposes an elimination of the cap on the number of charter schools allowed in NYC, which will allow more great schools to open in the city and meet parent demand. The proposal also calls for increased rental assistance for public charter schools forced to locate in private facilities. Lastly, Gov. Cuomo’s budget calls for the space made available to public charter schools be representative of their planned growth. For example, if a new public charter school plans to grow to grades from K-4, the Department of Education must offer them space that can accommodate all the grades they are approved to serve.
