Learn About Public Charter Schools

The facts, history, proven success, and the journey ahead

Achievement First Amistad parent, Chantal Pettigrew, tells Charter Renewal Committee how her school has changed her daughter’s life.

My name is Chantal Pettigrew, my daughter Johnae Nelson is a 7th grader at Achievement First Amistad Academy. She has been attending Amistad since the kindergarten. I’m here today to ask for your support in renewing Achievement First New Haven’s charter.

When looking for a school to send Johnae, we researched and met with many schools, but none of them met our standards. The lottery came around and we applied to Amistad. We received a letter from New Haven public schools and my heart began to beat with doubt, but as I read on tears rolled down my face and my heart began to race with joy.

The day of orientation with scholars and parents Amistad clearly explained, we work in an environment where our scholars can achieve their potential and thrive in a safe yet challenging atmosphere. Our scholars are taught daily life skills and values; individual accountability, respect, safety, growth, and commitment. I believe our scholars are being set up for success by learning and practicing these values on an everyday basis. They are learning to push themselves academically and work hard to exceed expectations.

I believe each child deserves this opportunity. Amistad has been the answer for so many families demanding a good education that prepares scholars for the future. This school pushes scholars to be the best they can by setting high expectations and holding our children accountable. Tonight, I ask you to support the renewal of Amistad’s charter so that it can continue to serve scholars like Johnae. Thank you for your time.
